Scholarship of Teaching and Learning
I have enjoyed learning and teaching throughout my medical career. My role as an educator has slowly evolved through my medical career. I joined the Orthopaedic Department in 1996 and have thrived on my teaching interactions with medical students and residents. My resident teaching involves formal lectures, informal case based rounds, clinical teaching with patients and teaching psychomotor skills in the operating room suite. I have actively sought out teaching within the residency and undergraduate medical program. My role in teaching undergraduate students has included being a group leader in the medical school clinical skills courses and supervising a large number of elective students. I have found small group problem based resident teaching sessions to be most rewarding and a style of teaching for which I have a natural skill. For the past seven years I have led weekly teaching sessions for residents at Children's Hospital that are very highly rated by the residents.
I have greatly enjoyed my teaching experiences. Teaching within surgical residency training continues to be largely what I would describe as "seat of the pants type teaching". Residents get a great deal of their education in through working alongside staff surgeons. Prior to the last decade very little attention was paid to resident education. I very quickly develop a reflective clinical practice when I started working at Children's Hospital in 1996. I am constantly evaluating my surgical results, either informally or formally within a research project. I then try to improve my surgical techniques and improve on those results. I have tried to equip myself with an education in the field of teaching. I initially completed the TIPS course at St Paul's hospital. I have joined the Association for Surgical Educators and attended the annual meeting in 2002. I was fortunate to be able to participate in the University of British Columbia Teaching Certificate program in 2003 - 2004. These experiences and others have allowed me to develop a reflective practice towards teaching and learning within the Orthopaedic Residency Program and within the Medical School. My success as a resident educator led to my appointment as Director of Postgraduate Education in the Department of Orthopaedics. I continue to apply my knowledge of teaching and learning to improve the education of surgical residents at the University of British Columbia. In addition, I am creating a formal educational curriculum for resident's half day that develops rotation specific objectives directly linked to assessment tools and content. I am in the process of submitting an educational grant to the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
As Director of Postgraduate Education in the Department of Orthopaedics I have created a number of goals for my own teaching and learning and for the development of the educational program within the department. In the long term I would like to continue to refine and develop my own teaching skills through a reflective teaching practice. I would also like to continue to develop a scholarly approach to teaching and learning through the completion of a number of educational research projects with submission and presentation in peer reviewed forums. One of my long term goals is to act as an educational resource person within the Department.
